Burgas is a unique place for every lover of nature and birds. Every year, thousands of ornithologists from around the world visit the city to enjoy the flight of these free-range creatures, hoping to catch some rare bird species in the lens of their cameras. A total of 290 different species of birds can be observed in the area of the three Burgas lakes declared as reserves, such as: Eurasian Spoonbill, Common Kingfisher, mute swan, Dalmatian pelican, buzzard, various herons, European Honey-buzzard, Kentish Plover, Greater Spotted eagle and others.
Burgas is the only city not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe, within which there is a nature reserve and so many migratory and permanent living birds. The three large lakes that surround Bourgas have become a beautiful home and resting place for some of the most remarkable species of birds. This is due to the second largest migration route "Via Pontica", passing along the entire Black sea coast.
October 10 / Saturday / is the International Day of Bird Migration. In honor of this day in the town will be regularly organized bird watching for anyone with professional ornithologists. The places are:
- the bird shelter on Atanasovsko Lake / at the exit for Sarafovo, next to the Lukoil gas station /;
- Nature Protection Center "Poda" on Lake Mandra / on the road to Kraimorie /.
Another wonderful addition to the region are the bike alleys that connect Atanasovsko Lake to the north and "Poda" - Mandra lakes to the south. This is a great way to diversify the weekend by combining ornithological tourism with sports activities.
